The University Grants Commission has decided to provide laptops under the loan scheme to 40,000 students entering universities this year.
Laptops can be purchased up to a maximum of Rs.100,000, and students only have to pay monthly interest installments till the end of graduation.
The amount for the laptop must be paid after graduation.
The agreement was reached in talks with a state-owned bank and the University Grants Commission.
Banks have also agreed to charge a very low-interest rate for the scheme.
The University Grants Commission has announced that it will select companies to provide laptops under certain conditions, but students can purchase laptops from any company.
